A Virus to Inhibit Joy

Some people say: "Oh, what a joy it would be if I won a million dollars." Except, if this would be the essence of joy, most of humanity would be deprived of it. Fortunately this is not the case. To the contrary, joy is something that can be experienced quite freely. It is experienced when we come into contact with, and experience beauty. Some of the old cities of Europe are uniquely beautiful, which have their roots in the great unfolding of the human dimension that is called the Golden Renaissance. It has been said of these cities that they are a joy to live in, which is not something that can be said about many of our modern North American cities which where built for different objectives.

What makes the old cities more beautiful, is the obvious fact they have been designed with the aim to be beautiful, a joy to behold, and a joy to be a part of them, by living there. It appears, therefore, that the creation of beauty is towards the experience of joy. It even appears that most elements of human culture are designed for this goal. "From joy does spring all this creation," wrote the poet. Perhaps the poet understood something that most of modern humanity has grown blind to.

If one realizes that the best and richest part of human culture is centered on beauty and joy, one can begin to understand the dimension of classical music. Here, one finds the fundamental elements which make human culture so rich, expressed in music, especially the music that comes out of that classical era and tradition in which the human dimension in all its elements was the main focal point. In this music one finds the rudimental elements of beauty and joy most profoundly expressed as the main object to be projected, rather than emotions or a story line.
