Suppose you were
king for a day. How would you about
designing an apathy virus that is effective in protecting the
empire's looting
of society, by which the empire exists?
Well, the answer to this question has many aspects. Let us
examine some.
1. For starters, you, as king, would have to lie to society.
You would have to tell society that its state of affairs is basically in
order, even as you suck the life-blood out of its economy. You would
have to tell the people not to worry when a crisis looms on the horizon
and the evidence of it can no, longer be hidden behind a screen of lies. In
this case you tell the people that you have the means to put out any fire
that should spring up,
meet any emergency, overcome any danger. You would tell them that they
should go back to
their Beanie Babies, their games, their movies, their sports, and their
stock market trading. The Roman empire gave its citizens festivals and exhilarating
circuses, chariot races and gladiators, anything to hide the reality of a
collapsing empire.
