It is a fact of history that Bertrand Russell became the driving force behind the allied lobbying to persuade the USA to commit itself to develop an atom bomb. This history also shows that it was well known to British intelligence that Adolf Hitler had neither the capability and resources, nor the inclination to commit himself to build such a bomb. Of course this knowledge was not revealed to America. Scare stories were spread, instead. Bertrand Russell wanted this bomb, and he wanted it for the political purposes that accorded with H.G. Wells' idea, to create a threat so immense that the nations would willingly give up their sovereignty to a World-Government if this assured their security.

It was suggested by historians in later years that there was no military imperative to use the Atom bomb against Hiroshima and Nagasaki. McArthur's forces had Japan so tightly under siege that not a fish could have gotten out without their permission. In fact the Japanese Emperor had been negotiating for an honorable surrender through the Vatican for two months prior to the bombing. Therefore it has been suggested that the horrendous sacrifice of two entire living cities, which were reduced to ashes, served no other purpose than to stage a demonstration exercise of the fury of this weapon in accord with the original design for the atomic bomb as envisioned by H. G. Wells and Bertrand Russell.
