The playground of the Great Game is geographically the center of the world. To the North of it lies Russia; to the East, China; in the South, India, Pakistan and Iran; and to the West of it lies the Balkan region and Western Europe. This playground is centered on the Caspian Sea with the Caucasus to the West and a number of small Central Asian republics to the East that include such political hot spots as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tibet. The central location of this area, and the relative ease with which its small ethnically diverse tribes and republics can be isolated and recruited for terrorist objectives has made this entire area an ideal staging ground for the destabilization of every major nation on the Asian continent, with a history that goes back in time to the early 1800s, to the height of the imperial era. Naturally, the British Empire had an interest in this area and established an effective control over the region, which may have begun almost as soon as Britain became a world-empire. The major focus on this era however started somewhat later under the direction of Lord Palmerston, a long time Prime Minister of England and foreign secretary. Ideologically, Palmerston was a disciple of Jerome Bentham, the coauthor with Adam Smith of the free-trade virus that had been implanted into the Paris Peace accord after the British Empire had failed to reclaim the American colonies by force. Since the virus had failed to destroy America and bring it back into the imperial fold, it appears that Palmerston's focus was set onto Europe and Asia, and with his ideological connection to Jerome Bentham he was ideally qualified to extend the Empire's control over this region.
