Metaphysics of Divine Science

It may be argued that spiritual processes and their results are fundamentally mental, reflecting changed attitudes, and so forth, but are world apart from the physicality of diseased bodies. Yes, this argument may be valid, but don't the changed attitudes result frequently in healthier lives? Many people testify that this is so.

Studies have confirmed that people who regularly attend church, on average, are healthier than those who don't. And what about the healing work of Christ Jesus, who made the lame walk, the blind to see, the lepers to be cleansed, who even overcame death? Here, we have physical effects that are so profound that they have become unbelievable, or are attributed to some special unnatural interventions. Except, if one believes this, one has another paradox to resolve, because this same type of healing was widely practiced from 1866 on, in the United States and a few other countries, on a scientific basis. It was discovered by a woman who was healed, literally on her death-bed, in a matter of moments. And the healing was total, and complete. When the local minister came by that day, to prepare her for death, she opened the door for him in the front parlor.

The dramatic healing was the result of certain thought processes. She determined that she would discover the Science of the processes involved, which she did. She named her discovery Christian Science. Nine years later she published her findings in the form of a textbook, under the title: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This book was constantly updated and refined by her over a span of 35 years. Over 300 editions of it were created until she passed away in 1910. This dedication to details and precision is the mark of scientist, not a religious dictator, as some might see her. In fact, she kept the major element of her work quietly hidden, right in the open, by not referring to it at all. It was left there to be discovered when a more advanced era of discovery would make the human thought receptive to it. It had remained unknown for a hundred years until the requisite receptivity opened the door to it in the early 1980s. What has been discovered appears to have been fundamental to all of her work, because the major element of it was already presented in the ninth edition of her textbook, that was published in 1884.
