The answer, evidently, depends on what one is gambling on. If one gambles on the endless continuity of rising stock market values, or the benign nature of fascism, one will find that such gambling is short lived and ends terribly. If, on the other hand, one gambles on the integrity and intelligence of humanity and its capacity to discover, understand, and respect the fundamental principles of the universe, then the horizons are bright, unlimited, and the potential for humanity's riches is infinite. But could this still be regarded as a form of gambling? Rolf A. F. Witzsche |
